When things go wrong we say things like, its market forces, government actions, customer expectations, children don’t do as they’re told, the list goes on. It’s always easier to blame something else. We all do it. Even business leaders.
Bill Taylor of the Harvard Business Review discusses Professor Sydney Finkelstein book, Why Smart Executives Fail. As a business professor, he did some business research, and found that
of the 51 case studies he examined in-depth, it was almost never true that an outside shock caused the failure. Instead, failure was the result of leaders “choosing not to cope” with obvious signs of change.
This does not bode too well for managing climate change. There are things we should do and things we want to do. Very often, the things we want to do get in the way of things we should do.
